Pelindo II Looking for Foreign Talent for Top Positions

Pelindo II's outspoken CEO Richard Lino, whose term ends in May, is set to ruffle feathers yet again, with plans to recruit four foreigners to the company’s board of directors.
Senior executives and the unions in December expressed opposition to Lino's earlier moves and leadership style, and demanded his resignation, and this latest policy direction is certain to raise more controversy.

Four out of nine board seats will be filled by foreigners as the company seeks offshore assistance to boost the management and efficiency of domestic ports. The company currently has only one non-Indonesian on its board; Australian CFO David Adams.

Pelindo II is looking for expatriates with a specialty in strategic operations, business development and human resources, Lino was quoted in local media as saying on the sidelines of his meeting with port operator Mitsui & Co in Tokyo recently.

“Many people shrieked ‘nationalism’, but it turned out that their deeds were not aimed at assisting the people, rather to support their own interests and enrich themselves,” he said, in defending his policy. “However, what I will do here is for the sake of improving service quality at ports, something that will benefit the economy and our people. Which one is more nationalistic?”
Previous controversial moves from Lino include allowing foreign investors to manage Indonesian ports by granting a 25-year concession for the Japan-based Mitsui for the management of the first terminal at the new Kalibaru Port.
